The K-Zone: EC Treaty

Strictly speaking, there is no specific document called the `EC Treaty'. The term generally refers to the original TreatyOfRome, which established the EEC, as variously ammendmented over the years by later treaties. The TreatyOfMaastricht renamed the EuropeanCommunities (by this time largely dominated by the EEC) to the `European Community', and re-issued the ammended (and renumbered) Treaty of Rome as the `Treaty Establishing the European Communities'. It is this that is generally contracted to `EC Treaty' (see EUTerminology for a discussion of the terminological problems relating to EU treaties).

The EC Treaty and the TreatyOfMaastricht were renumbered by the TreatyOfAmsterdam. In most textbooks, both old and new treaty numbers are given. On these pages, I only use the new numbers, except where stated to the contrary.
